Slide Projector Installations 2005-2006 Postures of Waiting NOVA gallery 2005 In July 2005, I created an installation using slide projectors at the NOVA gallery space in Chicago. The project was called Postures of Waiting and was based on a series of photographs I took of people waiting at a bus stop across the street from my house. The photographs were taken as slides, and two slide projectors were installed in the gallery with a number of these slides of waiting passengers. A prepared glass-bead projection screen was also installed in the gallery, with the silhouettes of the waiting people stitched into the surface of the screen with embroidery thread. The slides were projected in sequence onto the screen, filling in one or two silhouettes at a time. A number of drawings on paper made using sets of these slides were also on view in the gallery. ![]() The Spaceman's Orbit Buildingscape gallery 2005 I installed this slide projector piece at Steve Matthewson's Buildingscape gallery in the Zhou B. Center in December 2005. This project utilized the projectors as animation devices. I took a series of slides of a plastic cosmonaut figure, encircling him in a 360-degree orbit with the camera. By using a cross-fade mechanism between two projectors, I was able to animate this orbit around the figure on a wall in the gallery. The viewer makes a slow but steady trajectory around the triumphant cosmonaut, as suns set and rise on the horizon. ![]() |
