Fault Maps.
With Taylor Hokanson
CNC-cut particleboard
2007
Taylor and I collaborated on this project based on our interests in producing automated abstraction through processes and mechanical failures. We were thinking about manhole covers as mass-produced objects that accumulate unique "faults" through their placement in the world. Our interest was in recreating these manhole covers in order to focus on the general formal similarities and individual differences. We took photographs of dozens of manhole covers in Chicago and Vienna, and processed the photographs using software. We then cut the results into particleboard using a computer-controlled router.
