cassette tape wall drawing
Four audio cassette tapes, pins, paint.
2006.

The cassette tape wall drawings are a series of installations which use audio cassette tapes as drawing material. Each tape is completely unwound, and is then pinned to a wall using straight pins, in much the same manner in which a biological specimen might be mounted. The tapes are used to create regular, space-filling geometric patterns. Like much of my work, these pieces focus on the materiality and object-hood of analog media.

A recent incarnation of a cassette tape wall drawing featured four tapes onto which had been recorded musique concrete compostions from the 40's-60's, including Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Henry and Tod Dockstader. These were audio compositions for tape being used as material for physical, visual compostions for tape. These tape designs exist as temporary and permanent installations as well as on paper.

This recent version of the cassette tape wall drawing project was exhibited at Duchess in Chicago during March and April of 2006. The central wall drawing from the installation was purchased by collectors. The drawing was reconfigured based on specifications given by the collectors, and was re-installed as a permanent site-specific piece in July of 2006.
